DESCRIPTION:
Along the way we also learn about the tools and craft of traditional blacksmithing, the location of a good whetstone quarry, the different uses of a great wheel, and many other skills related to and interdependent with woodworking. It will also fascinate the curious, the lover of lore, and the modern woodworker interested in the simpler, older, and quieter techniques. The final chapter offers a glimpse of traditional woodworking techniques still used by the Colonial Williamsburg housewrights. This revised edition of the woodcraft classic combines the original WOODWRIGHT'S SHOP with its follow-up, THE WOODWRIGHT'S COMPANION, to make one hefty, thorough manual that will prove invaluable to every lover of the tools, trade and practice of traditional woodcraft. Underhill's goal is to demonstrate how to start with a tree and an axe and make one thing after another until you have a house and everything in it. Each chapter in THE WOODWRIGHT'S SHOP parallels a program in the series. Starting with a guide to the various kinds of trees and the characteristics of their wood, Underhill walks us through an entire course in traditional woodcraft, without the use of any power tools. It includes 600 photographs.. THE WOODWRIGHT'S SHOP was conceived as a companion to the PBS television series of the same name
Two books for the price of one! Happy Ten What's not to love about anything done by Roy Underhill. If you like the Woodwright's Shop then you'll like this book. His sense of humor and way of doing things is unlike anyone else. It's no wonder he's a successful author and had an award winning television show for over 33 years!Just be aware that this is actually two prior books ("Woodwright's Shop" of 1981 and "Woodwright's Companion" of 1983) that were republished as a single. Th Art of Woodcraft Revitalized! Dan Justis I enjoy all of Roy Underhill's books; Exploring Traditional Woodcraft offers readers a comprehensive understanding of early woodworking. Roy shares from the care and safety of selecting & felling a tree to raising framework. Additional focus on building or carving tools, using iron work for tempering tools, and expert dovetailing for integrity of finished timber. Roy cleverly adds humor, stories, and wit to each chapter. I highly re. A must for Underhill fans. Wonderful book, hope to have it signed soon.
