From the opening chapter I loved the character of Emmaline, a young blind woman with the gift of healing and caring. Having lived in France where such gifts were considered witchcraft she makes her way back to England to a brother who had abandoned her as a child. In his care at the brothel he runs, she quietly lives out her life. Her blindness combined with her brother’s restrictions makes life more of an existence that she mu. Also it was a time where Emma was trying save both Malcolm and his brother's life. Cailean was also severely injured in a fight at the brothel. They are hidden away there as they are attempting to heal. That alone is quite the unusual part of the story. I wasn't expecting that, but it definitely added to the story.
