DESCRIPTION:
. Abraham (The Romance Reader, etc.) stitches many subplots and themes revelatory of Chasid life into her story, including the tale of an unfunny wedding jester (badkhn), Yankel Yankevitch; the often bitter rivalries between Chasid sects; and Ada's unlikely commercial success as a fashion designer for Chasid women. All rights reserved. Moshele's worries increase as Joel becomes subject to seizures, takes an unauthorized journey to Nachman's grave in Uman, Ukraine, and is quietly expelled from the yeshiva. From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Those looking for successors to Isaac Bashevis Singer (whose short stories were published by the Library of America this summer) should read Abraham's novel about contemporary Chasids. "Begger is a begger." according to Paul Masvidal. This book was a disappointment, as I believe the author is capable of much more. Should you read it anyway, I think you will regret it. It was a waste of my time, and I rarely say that. Pearl Abraham wrote The Romance Reader, and that I enjoyed with all my heart, so I was really looking forward to more of her work. I do hope she returns to the beauty and truth of The Romance Reader.. Completely Disappointing This book is a rambling disjointed unconnected hodgepodge of ideas.Like creating a Chullent, the author tries to make a blend but the book falls apart.Having just finished the book, I feel soiled. I want my money back. I want to toss it in the trash as a total and complete waste of time.. N. Bonner said What is the point?. I have had this book on reserve at the library for almost nine months and was often tempted to buy it. I'm glad I didn't. I liked the author's first book, The Romance Reader, and hated the second,Giving Up America. So I thought I'd give her another chance. What a waste of time! The book is in two parts. The first part relates the struggle of a young Chassidish boy, Joel. Joel is attracted to the writings of another Chassidic sect--
Now Abraham returns to that world, in an ambitious and dazzling new novel about the possibilities-and perils-of storytelling and creation.. Pearl Abraham's debut novel, The Romance Reader, was praised for covering uncharted territory, deftly lifting the opaque curtain from the closed Chasidic world
