Alesha N. Gates said This is not the book you hated in high school .. There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, r. S. Houg said It's too bad that most modern readers have a hard time adjusting. It's been probably sixty years since I read The Scarlet Letter, and what a treat to revisit this masterpiece as a mature adult. While in my youth, the lurid potential of the story was probably what most fascinated, this time around it was the highly nuanced and devastating development of the Reverend Dimmisdale's character. Hawthorne's insight into the psychology of religious pharaseeism elicited both sympathy and revulsion. I feel I can now truly understand his desperate yet doomed attempts to break out of the prison of conformity to a tightly controlled theologi. The Scarlet Letter is one of my favorite books. I first read it in 1968 when The Scarlet Letter is one of my favorite books. I first read it in 1968 when it was required reading in my high school American Literature class. I fell in love with this story and have revisited it several times through the years. I find encouragement in the fact that Hester is able to transform her badge of dishonor into a Medal of Honor through her humility and kind deeds. I highly recommend this classic book
