DESCRIPTION:
A delicious sense of creeping dread permeates the first act, greatly enhanced by its setting in the stark but beautiful landscape of northwestern Alaska. The Romanov Cross is at once an alternate take on one of history’s most profound mysteries, a love story as unlikely as it is inevitable, and a thriller of heart-stopping, supernatural suspense. With his signature blend of fascinating history and fantastic imagination, critically acclaimed author Robert Masello has once again crafted a terrifying story of past events coming back to haunt the present day and of dark deeds aching to be unearthed.Praise for The Romanov Cross “In this fascinating, funny, and frightening supernatural thriller, Robert Masello skillfully weaves together the story of the deaths of the Russian royal family with the possibility of a new worldwide influenza pandemic. Frank must determine if the thawed remains still carry the deadly virus in their frozen flesh and, if so, ensure that it doesn’t come back to life. Fine prose and plotting help solidify Masello’s position at the top of this crowded subgenre.”—Publishers Weekly “A former Army epidemiologist contends with greedy locals and the harsh Alaskan terrain in order to prevent the recurrence of a deadly pandemic. "Da Vinci Code" style thriller The problem with reading a lot is that- unless it is very special- every book reminds you of another. Although it’s been years since I read “The Da Vinci Code”, Masello’s “The Romanov Cross” seemed strikingly similar. Same formula- take some science, add a dash of mysticism, throw in some history, sprinkle in as many unrelated subjects as you can and shake well. While the story had its interesting moments, it had enough problems that I didn’t find it more than “OK”. Like many thrillers of its type there are serious logic issues that are very distracting. . blacksburg said I almost gave up on this book early on - glad i didn't.. A reference to global warming really put me off. I read to get away from politics, not to further immerse myself in it. Fortunately, that was one of only two quick references to global warming and apart from a ridiculous allusion to the Tea Party, it was clear of politics.Glad i kept at it. This is an excellent book.Haven't read this guy before. This was very well done. He juggled three or four different scenarios, many different characters and even different times in history and did so wonderfully. I have always been fascinated with russian history, especially the end of the czars and the rise of the commu. Loved it. I've just recently discovered this author. I've loved everything I've read so far, and this is my favorite. He ties the past to the present in fascinating ways. You'll get some history lessons, some chills, and lots of adventure. His characters are so likeable!
