Dumber than Dirt Thomas Mcnaughton I searched through the on-line advertisement to see who the translator might be, as this volume does not appear to be written in greek. There is no indication of who should be blamed for this atrocity, but the rhyming couplet format seems to have the fingerprints of Alexander Pope.This may not be a "First Edition", but it is surely an old one. It is a disservice to modern readers to fob off an old and queerly translated edition as "Homer".I rated this volume at one star, simply because there is no provision to rate it at zero.. K. Schell. "The Odyssey of Homer - 1st Edition" implies that it is the first edition of a 2700+ year old, originally oral work, which is obviously not the case. Furthermore, nowhere in the page or preview does it indicate whose translation of the poem it is, but based on the older poetic style of translation, I would be seriously surprised if this is even actually a first edition of the translator's work. I have not seen the book yet, and I, too, was surprised that the translator doesn't receive proper credit. I agree that if it's in couplets it's surely the "Pope" translation, which may make it worth purchasing in itself. I haven't checked for sometime, but several years ago when I was working on my MA I wanted to get hold of a copy of Pope's translations of the Iliad and Odyssey, but found them to be hard to come by and, hence, very pricey. I wouldn't mind having an affordable copy of Pope's translation.
