Terrible message for girls and boys, right in the first paragraph The first paragraph describes Sister Bear as having trouble with math and science, but doing very well in language arts. Brother Bear struggles in language arts but does well in math and science. As a physician, scientist, mother of boy/girl twins and someone who struggled and watched fellow female students struggle against academic sexism in the sciences, I THOUGHT MY HAIR WOULD CATCH ON FIRE when I read this. Papa is so excited that he forces her to learn more words. She cannot even go play with her friends. He drills the words into her. At first he thought she could handle the pressure, but at the end he realizes he was only using Sister to give himself delight she should have had..
