DESCRIPTION:
World War I (1914-1918), the war to end all wars, is both a continuation of an earlier conflict, the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), and a prelude to the greater horrors of World War II (1939-1945). That detail is lost in the bigger picture of European and world history.. A fact historians and scholars tend to ignore is that little Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was in various ways at the origin or at the heart of these conflicts
Claudia Scott said A wonderful history for all of us. This is the third book of Gardini's that I have read and my favorite for the pictures and touching ( not always easy to read as in firing squads etc) . I thought that I knew European history, but somehow completely overlooked this small kingdom and it's role in the wars. The story of young Marie-Adelaide is also one that touches the senses as to what this young ruler had to face in a world turned upside-down. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to complete their European history education.
