The babe raised a fist toward his face and shook it. of Mayfair. As if the babe knew this, its wailing petered out. "I make no promises." It was all new to him. As a young boy he was pulled apart by squabbling parents: his father, True Deverill, the rogue we all know and love from True Story (The Deverells Book 1), and his mother, Lady Charlotte, the most self-serving, self-centered, self-obsessed woman I've come across (in books or real life). And Ransom can't sleep. He's haunted by Sally White, the young woman whose death he was accused of causing. Although proven innocent, he remains guilt-stricken and feeling he is unworthy and irredeemabl. .5 stars) Ransom Deverill is a "Determined Malefactor." "Witty and fun!" according to Kimberlee Jewell. I had just finished reading a very angst-filled book, and needed something witty and fun and this story really fit the bill! I just loved Ransom ~ rakish, irreverent, all-around party boy who is desperate to keep the fun going ~ if it stops, reality comes crashing in. Guilt over the accidental death of a young woman. An uneasy relationship with a father he was raised to hate. A bitter, self-absorbed mother. Siblings who dump all of their problems on his shoulders. Whew! Then he meets Mary, a breath of fresh air in his stale world. She doesn't flirt with him, bow down to him, or even seem to like him very much. Ransom . Here we go again Ransom thinks he's irredeemable and has nightmares over an accident six years earlier. So he doesn't sleep, he has nightly parties. But we see here how, despite his hell raising, he's constantly pulling his siblings' fat out of the fire. Damon's "problem" is just the latest. Against all odds, Ransom is a responsible brother and son.The morning after one of Ransom's orgies, his mistress returns from France unexpectedly and pitches a fit. Ransom runs and finds himself in a shabby book shop where he begs the young lady to "Save me!" She does. She's our heroine, Mary Ashford. From debutante to book seller, Mary is quite a
