DESCRIPTION:

He cowrote "The Pragmatic Programmer" and was one of the creators of the Agile Manifesto. Dave Thomas is a programmer who likes to evangelize cool stuff. His book "Programming Ruby" introduced the Ruby language to the world, and "Agile Web Development with Rails" helped kickstart the Rails revolution.

Your applications become fun to work with, and the language encourages you to experiment.Part 1 covers the basics of writing sequential Elixir programs. This book is the introduction to Elixir for experienced programmers.Maybe you need something that's closer to Ruby, but with a battle-proven environment that's unrivaled for massive scalability, concurrency, distribution, and fault tolerance. Because Elixir runs on the Erlang VM, and uses the underlying Erlang/OTP architecture, it benefits from almost 20 years of research into high performance, highly parallel, and seriously robust applications. You want to explore functional programming, but are put off by the academic feel (tell me about monads just one more time). You're also investigating designs that help you maximize uptime and manage security. This book is your guide to Elixir, a modern, functional, and concurrent programming language. You know you need concurrent applications, but also know these are almost impossible to get right. We'll look at the language, the tools, and the conventions.Part 2 uses these skills to start writing concurrent code--applications that use all the cores on your machine, or all the machines on your network! And we do it both wi

This is an awesome book for newcomers to functional programming Paul Ewing This is an awesome book for newcomers to functional programming. The author tries to force the reader to do things "the functional way." There is some outdated material but overall it's still good. My one complaint is that the author does gloss over some of the more advanced topics.. Redvers Davies said Focusses on the how and the why, not the syntax. Issues understanding functional programming? This is the book you need. As someone who really see the need for being able to code on the Erlang virtual machine I had tried and failed to get proficiency in Erlang. Along comes Elixir with promises of a shallower learning-curve and that prompted me to watch Dave's keynote at the first Erlang Conference: https://youtube.com/watch?v=5hDVftaPQwYHis infectious enthusiasm and ability to translate the difficult concept during that talk were enough motivation for me to buy the book.I have not been disappointed.Learning YetAnotherImperativeLanguage or YetAnothe
