Surely the "End of the World" theme would have been adequate without the "Italian Feud Involving Our Damaged, Yet Brave Heroine Who Falls for an Italian Nobleman" theme. The sci fi part is satisfying, but hobbled by the attempt at romance, and the female lead is one of the more irritating characters I've come across in recent years.. Adam Willard said Poor side plots plod slowly, great concept and execution (of main plot). The book was gripping and very enjoyable by the end, but it too a bit too long to get to that point. I didn't like the set-up of the book too much. Mather spent too much time trying to characterize his characters as quirky, with a backstory, etc., and I felt like a lot of that was wasted. Some of it came into play in later action, but a lot of it seemed pointless. It's not that I don't enjoy good characterization in a book, I really do.
