The M109A6 is the latest development of the M109 series and incorporates advanced fire control systems that enable it to have its first rounds on target less than 60 seconds after arriving at firing location. Entering service in the early 1960s, the M109 Self-Propelled Howitzer has been in production for 34 years and forms the backbone of US Army and Reserve artillery units. This book details an impressive and versatile weapon that has served around the globe in Southeast Asia and in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.. This ability to shift quickly between moving and firing modes avoids counter battery fire and ensures battlefield survivability

What you see is what you get You know what you are buying when you purchase a New Vanguard series of books, the M109 155mm SPH is no exception. It has to be short, it is not meant to be an exhaustive study. I think it is an excellent balance of history of the development of Self Propelled Artillery for the US Army.Author Steven Zaloga traces the history of mechanized artillery from WW2 to the present. Great B&W photos, color drawings, line dra. Mediocre If one is interested in getting a very short overview of the vehicle in an hour's of reading this book does its job. It provides decent history of vehicle, its development and variants but is quite weak in terms of its discussion of performance of vehicle and its strengths and weaknesses. No discussion of vehicle relative to non-U.S. counterparts hence one really does not get a grasp of how this vehicle stands up t. "short and simple" according to Tor Fridlender. this book offers a short summary of the m109 worldwide service and history. It doesn't go into ammunitions, structure, use and so on.

He has published numerous books and articles dealing with modern military technology, especially armored vehicle development. Steven J Zaloga was born in 1952 and received his BA in history from Union College and his MA from Columbia University. He has written extensively on American armored forces.

There is no knocking the New Vanguard series. . They're cheap, informative and very user friendly
