DESCRIPTION:

Located in old Southern cities such as Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans, as well as seaside and mountain retreats, these intimate dwellings are steeped in architectural tradition. The residences profiled illustrate fresh design interpretations of romantic Southern style, such as a New Orleans double-shotgun with a modern all-white palette, a nineteenth-century summer cottage with updated coastal decor, and a Louisiana plantation house with handsome Creole antiques. Dating from the eighteenth century to the present, the houses featured exemplify historic styles that evolved in response to their natural settings, inviting families to live in harmony with their surroundings. Comfort and hospitality are words that express the spirit of simple Southern style. Two sections, "Pure and Simple" and "Simply Elegant," explore the varied ways that Southerners express their love of comfort and gracious living. Integrating time-honored lessons of the past, these cozy dwellings also incorporate contemporary design sensibilities, making them especially appealing for today’s lifestyle.. This volume celebrates the warmth and easy elegance of traditional Southern architecture and interior design, featuring houses of unpretentious and old-fashioned grace that showcase the talents of the South’s finest design profession

Annag Chandler said Some charm but little value. I gauge a design book by how many pages I dog-ear or scan for an idea book -- this one clocked in at three. I found very little to differentiate the houses from any generic magazine. While it has a subtitle of "simple southern style", if the houses weren't identified by locale, you would be hard-pressed [except for the Savannah and the Louisiana houses] to pick these out as "southern" instead of standard American traditional. It's headed for the charity shop; not worth space on the bookshelv. Eric M. said Charming All Around. From the moment I discovered the elegant and, yes, charming fabric pattern on the case, hidden beneath the jacket, I knew this book would be full of delightful surprises. One of the especially wonderful things about this book is that the author, Susan Sully, makes you re-avaluate the basic concept of 'charm.' She successfully illustrates that it can apply to a very wide range of residences, both large and intimate in scale, and both historical/antique-filled and bracingly modern in interior . Betty Gene Hibner said A disappointment. I should have been more alert to the use of "simple" in the title. The pictures are mostly of minimalist interiors in white, black and beige tones. I was hoping to be inspired but instead was disappointed.

She is also the co-author of The Home Within Us, and has written for Veranda, Town & Country Travel, Martha Stewart Living, and other magazines. Susan Sully is a renowned expert on Southern style. . Her books include The Southern Cosmopolitan and The Southern Cottage
