DESCRIPTION:
A. Valkin said Great help to jazz piano students. I agree with the other reviews - Andy has a lot to teach, based on his deep understanding of jazz piano and life experience playing and learning with some jazz greats. The focus here is only on rehramonisation and that is a great plus, with no time wasted teaching basic aspects of jazz such as chord construction or voicing - if you need that, look at The Jazz Piano Book (which also does great justice to the topic, but with much fewer worked out standards), or Total Keyboard Wizardry: A Technique and Improvisation Workbook.. Good reharmonization book Tom Ewall This is really more of a rehamonization book than a chord substitution book. You won't find, for example, a list of chords with choices to substitute for these chords, rather you'll find something much better, approaches the author uses when reharmonizing. The book is organized in two sections. The first part he has different topics, such as, for example, approach chords, with examples. He also gives the reader a chance to try out a technique, comparing his answer with the author's (Randy Felts uses this same technique). W. Andy Laverne's chord sub book Amazon Customer Andy Laverne has chosen a great format for his book: providing the original chord changes via the original sheet music, then giving two versions with his chord substitution choices. Andy is a great pianist and arranger, so insight into his process for substitution is invaluable the only suggestion I would make is to have another version with all three chord choices listed simultaneously. Also, let's have volume 2!
A guide to creating your own special chord substitutions when playing any tune! Includes chapters on tritone substitution, changing chord qualities, pedal points, modulations, suspensions, alterations of chord tones and numerous other arranging concepts. Includes: Cherokee * Darn That Dream * Indiana * Moonglow * A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square * Exactly Like You * My Melancholy Baby and more.
