DESCRIPTION:
Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. Plato's retelling of the discourses between Socrates and his friends on such subjects as love and desire, truth and illusion, spiritual transcendence and the qualities of a good ruler, profoundly affected the ways in which we view human relationships, society and leadership - and shaped the whole tradition of Western philosophy.
He wrote over twenty philosophical dialogues. Plato (c.427-347 BC) stands with Socrates and Aristotle as one of the founders of the Western intellectual tradition. Inspired by Socrates' teaching, Plato sought a cure for the ills of society not in politics but in philosophy, and in the early fourth century BC he founded the Academy in Athens, the first permanent institution devoted to philosophical research and teaching.
Not the edition advertised J. T. Ormsbee The kindle version is NOT the Penguin Edition that it claims to be. Rather, you get the IndyPublishers edition translated by Benjamin Jowett. Amazon needs to correct this error. If you care about the translation and publisher, do not buy this.. "Wrong Kindle Edition" according to Ashutosh Dixit. This review is for the Kindle edition of what is supposedly the Christopher Gill translation of Plato's Symposium. However it turns out if you download it that it is the same as the Benjamin Jowett translation which is available for free, whereas here you have to pay upwards of $8 for it. I also checked Penguin Classics web site and they do not indicate that a eBook version of this book is available. So be careful when purchasin. A very modern translation Erez Davidi Too many words were written and said about this classic for me to add anything new. So i'll only make a short comment on the translation. I found it to be very readable and modern. At times even too modern. "Come on, he said, why don't you repeat this to me now?" I thought it was fairly amusing the modernity of their dialog, but understandably some readers might find it to be quite annoying.
