DESCRIPTION:
He covers past masters of the genre, as well as non-Western perspectives. Here's a fine book for advanced students. From Library Journal Each of these three books deals with the complex challenge of painting flowers, but the similarity ends there. Riley, teaching a freestyle method in watercolors, offers the finest of the three books. In seven lessons she demonstrates the soft petals and strong colors of magnolias, African tulips, and cascading roses in combination with lush peaches, pears, and figs. The book is misnamed, for the flowers aren't rendered realistically but in the formal style decorative artists use for ornamenting plates and baskets. The results are truly sumptuous. The technical sections on lighting flowers, resist painting, and two-color brushwork are beautifully done. In an extremely well-laid-out manual, Riley provides a kind of master class that teaches as much about how to observe flowers as how to paint them. An instructor at the Scottsdale Artist's

Connor Martin said Paul Riley Flower Painting. Excellent innovative approach to painting flowers in watercolor. Paul Riley departs from the standard format of predictable how to books and speaks of research and investigation, planning and preparation, exactly as he might as a teacher. (He runs successful painting workshops from his studio in Devon.) Flowers are synonymous with color and Riley is a consummate colorist. He uses unusual tools, calligraphy brushes and bamboo pens to achieve his effects. Beautiful color, articulately written.. christine said Essential Book for the Loose Watercolor Painter. This book provides a fresh look at at how to paint flowers, fruit and china. The unique paintings are breathtaking simple, direct, flowing and gorgeous. Paul shows you how to use different brushes (hake, squirrel, and sable) to get the look of his washes. There is also very good information on how to control your water flow with the brush, and tips on watercolor mediums (ox gall, etc.), which many books do not cover. As a watercolor instructor for over 10 years, I find this to be an excellent book, and I have read many!. Gayle K. Bodine said Beautiful Book for Beginner and Advanced Alike. I love art books and have been painting seriously since the '80s. This is the most beautiful book on flower painting I have ever seen. His subtext "How to paint free and vibrant watercolours" is a great description. His use of color, shape, pattern and innovation is remarkable. No stiffness or predictability here. Thanks Paul for something fresh and stunning.
