DESCRIPTION:

Fredric W. Taylor is Halley Professor of Physics in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics at the University of Oxford.

At the same time, interest in understanding the climate has received an enormous boost from the concern generated by the realization that rapid climate change, much of it forced by the relentless increase in population and industrialization, is potentially a serious threat to the quality of life on Earth. In an introductory course like that presented here, we want to clarify the basics, topic by topic, and see how far we can get by applying relatively simple Physics to the climate problem. Our ability to resist and overcome any such threat depends directly on our ability to understand what physical effects are involved and to predict how trends may develop. This provides a foundation for more advanced work, which we can identify and appreciate at this level although of course a full treatment requires more advanced books, of which there are many.. Climate Physics is a modern subject based on a space-era understanding of the physical properties of the atmosphere and ocean, their planetary-scale history and evolution, new global measurement systems and sophisticated computer models, which collectively make quantitative

The text is appropriate for undergraduates in the physical sciences and for graduate students and others requiring a quantitative introduction to the field." --SciTech Book News"Tayloroffers a well-written book about climate-related topics, focusing somewhat on global warmingThe bookis suitable for anyone interested in climate of possible global warming."--CHOICE. "Taylor offers an elementary treatment of the composition and structure of the atmosphere and ocean and their planetary-scale behavior and evolution, as well as principles of new global measurement systems and theories underlying data analysis and the construction of numerical computer models. Chapter questions provide samples of what might be found in exams at the undergraduate, non-specialist level

There are formulae in this book, but in my case, I focused more in the concepts. The book is maste. Gene Mick said Good Intro to Climate Physcis. As a physicist with no experience in climatology, I'm finding this book a good source of information to help sort out the many conflicting views on climate change. Readers will find some background in mathematics helpful, but not essential, in understanding the material.. "excellent balanced overview" according to arpard fazakas. This is an excellent overview of the physics of Earth's climate, including solar radiation, astronomical influences, the physics of the atmosphere and ocean, remote sensing of climate variables, and climate modelling. There is also a chapter on climates of other planets. Portions of it are at the advanced undergraduate level, but someone without an extensive background in math or physics could find
