DESCRIPTION:
"An excellent addition to the Zen Cannon" according to Reader. This work is among those honorable books on Zen Buddhism which try to capture the "living" word of a Zen teacher. Though this is ultimately impossible, the attempt here is no less than inspiring, and if it were ever to be done, this would be very close. This is one of the first books where the awkwardness of the language actually makes it better. One gets a sense of the teachers persona and personal voice. From a teaching point of view, it also reminds us how the unpolished quality of a thing can make it even more beautiful.Lastly, perhaps this may seem trivial, its nice compact size. Direct transmission from Zen Roshi Maezumi Echoless Valley is a great book for any Zen student.Maezumi Roshi founded Zen Center of Los Angeles, where hundreds of his dharma talks are stored on tape. This book is extracted directly from a few dharma talks without editing his heavily accented English. (This was done extremely well by Egyoku Roshi in Appreciate Your Life: The Essence of Zen Practice (Shambhala Classics), a truly indispensible book for any Zen newcomer.) Having heard some of the ZCLA tapes, I can say that Echoless Valley carries much more freight as a result of the verbatim text: while reading the book I got a s. John D. Buksbazen said roshi lives on. I studied with Maezumi Roshi from the late Sixties through the Seventies. Reading this book, I felt his presence. His language, inflections, and idiom shine through unhampered; this is a model of editorial sensitivity to the actual voice of a great teacher, and conveys his teaching beautifully.
