Previous books in the series have established a future in which the solar system has been claimed by three factions, but the stars are out of reach. The Expanse has done space opera right with touches of Aliens and Chinatown thrown in for flavor. However, much of the momentum created by the preceding novels has been wasted just as the universe has opened up. Mild Spoilers: The initial setup of squatters versus corpo. I take it as setting up the rest of the series, but by itself it was hard to keep interested in the story. Except for Holden and maybe one or two more exceptions, who are characters who seem to grow and develop as the larger story develops over the course of four books, everyone else is a predictable, unchanging entity in the greater universe.
