About the Author John Sabol is an archaeologist, cultural anthropologist, actor, and author. He has also been featured on public educational TV for U.S. He was a university professor in Mexico for 11 years, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses on the anthropology of tourism. Burnside Bridge was explored in a series of “ghost excavations”, in an attempt to “unearth” what still remains of that Civil War presence. There, less that 300 Confederates (2nd and 20th Georgia), and against overwhelming numbers, defended and held the bridge during five Union assaults. But others, who fought as bravely and heroically, remain unheralded or unknown.
