The standouts are "Blue World" (a richly imagined novella about a priest facing temptation); "Nightcrawlers" (a World Fantasy Award-winner about a Vietnam vet in a roadside diner); "Night Calls the Green Falcon" (has-been fictional hero dons his old costume to fight real evil); "Yellowjacket Summer" (fateful stop for gas in backwoods Georgia); and "Pin" (dare you to read that one). Just ok. I've read dozens of short story collections and this one isn't really memorable except for the title story. And even the title story is a bit of a mess. The 80% that consumes the middle of the novella is fantastic, some of the best writing of McCammon's career, but the whole killer part of the story takes away from.
