DESCRIPTION:
I did postdoctoral work on parasite community ecology with Dan Simberloff at Florida State University, and then accepted a faculty position at Colorado State University, where I have remained since 1983. I am currently a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and I teach courses in general biology, animal behavior, insect biology, and tropical biology. My research program focuses on the behavior and ecology of social insec
It addresses behavioral homeostasis and different aspects of animal behavior, learning, and cognition. It also offers chapters about behavior ecology in relation to animal behavior, such as movement, foraging, self-defense, mating systems, nesting, parenting and territoriality, and social behavior. Animal Behavior uses Tinbergen’s four questions–causation, survival value, ontogeny and evolution–to formulate animal behavior and impart logic to the field of scientific inquiry. In presenting these topics, the book offers an accessible means of studying animal behavior, major principles, mechanisms, and controversies.Provides a solid background in the neurophysiological and endocrinological bases of animal behavior as well as exceptionally strong coverage of social behaviorIncludes behavior and homeostatic mechanisms, behavior and conservation, and behavioral aspects of diseaseHighlights aspects of behavior that relate to domestic animals in particularLab manual with fully developed and tested laboratory exercises availabl
The text is focused on functional and evolutionary approaches to questions in behaviour, addressing only the bare bones of neural, physiological and genetic mechanisms. "Breed & Moore present an accessible introduction to behaviour that simultaneously captures the dynamic nature and diversity of the field. Topical and relevant areas are emphasized, such as the intersection between conservation and behaviour, and predicting behavioural responses to climate change."--Animal Behaviour 84 (2012) 289–291. "Great Animal Behavior Book for undergraduates" according to SnailLady. We just switched to this book for our animal behavior classes. Unlike the previous books this one is written with the undergraduate audience in mind. It has lots of examples and pictures as well as drawings. The price is good, the content is readable. The students found the sample readings to be fun and easy to follow. I would use Alcock for a graduate level course but for a non-majors undergraduate class this book was the best choice.. "A pretty good book." according to Victoria Fender. I bought this book for my Animal Behavior class and it has been a decent book so far. It is informative and enjoyable. You won't get bored with massive amounts of Scientific garble because it is written in a way that is more entertaining, which in my opinion, makes things more easily understood. It also makes it so that I want to read it, unlike most textbooks. Has good information and it makes you think about what is written. It's a good book.. "Perfect for someone electively taking Animal Behavior" according to Choko. I think this book is perfect for students with a genuine interest in animal behavior. I was highly impressed with this textbook, and for once, doing the readings for my class was actually enjoyable. It has good voice, and is written practically. The book is filled with pictures, case studies, and examples that illustrate the author's point. I think the textbook is thoughtfully organized as well.If you have no interest in animal behavior, then you might find the examples unnecessary, but personally, they made th
