As an amateur, Civil War historian, I appreciate the author's vivid detail and the historical accuracy of Grant's accomplishments during the war. Going beyond simple prose, the book is packed with informative maps, period pictures, and illustrations. However, for myself, the real treasure of this biography is found in the details of Grant's personal lif. "Best biography I have read on Grant thus far" according to Wood Wren. Stretching back over a number of years I have read at least three or four other biographies of Ulysses S. Grant. Some of these works have been good; some not so good. I must tell you that the one being reviewed here is the best of the lot thus far.I say this due to the fact that this is one of the most even handed handling of the subject of a somewhat controversial figure in our countries history. I read one biography several years agofor the life of me I cannot reme. Superb well written and easy to read biography John Stults An outstanding, well written biography. The author has a writing style that turns this biography into a real page turner as I found myself unable to put it down and wanting to read one more chapter each night. In addition to Grant's military service the author does a good job describing his early life, presidency and world tour and life after the presidency.
